Unable to Change DNS Server Set When Using Maxis Fibre Broadband on Technicolor TG784n Router
Symptom:
Have changed the DNS server sets from router's GUI but still unable to use custom DNS server sets for Maxis Technicolor TG784n Router.
Have changed the DNS server sets from router's GUI but still unable to use custom DNS server sets for Maxis Technicolor TG784n Router.
This is because Maxis had hard coded the router. Whatever changes you made for DNS server sets from GUI will not take effect.
Solution:
You've to use telnet/ command line to configure the router's DNS set.
Download any free Telnet client from Internet and connect to your gateway.
Popular clients are Putty and Microsoft default Telnet client.
Assuming your default router IP address is 192.168.1.254 if you've never changed this.
1. telnet 192.168.1.254
2. Use "Administrator" for username. It's case sensitive.
3. For password, you've to refer to the access key sticker on your router.
4. Copy and paste the following texts into telnet client.
dns server config state=disabled
dhcp server config state=disabled
dhcp server lease flush
dhcp server pool config name=LAN_private primdns=4.2.2.2 secdns=8.8.8.8
dhcp server config state=enabled
dns client flush
dns client dnsadd addr=4.2.2.2
saveall
exit
5. After this flush your local PC's DNS cache. In windows use ipconfig/flushdns or reboot your PC.
6. You will now be able to access websites blocked by MCMC/ SKMM on your Maxis fibre broadband.
Note:
Basic knowledge of PC IP addressing/ networking is required for these tasks.

Hi there, I'm a Mac + Maxis fibre internet user and I wanna try your technique by using free telnet as you mention. I downloaded zoc as my telnet, but I have difficulty to find my way to connect to the router and the right column to paste those script. Can you please help? Or is there any other easier telnet you can recommend? Many thanks in advance!

Using Astro Broadband under Maxis.. Anyone can help please
Wow...I thought I was the only one. I also realized this morning that 8.8.8.8 doesn't work anymore. I'm on Maxis Fiber. Weird thing is, when I tether my phone (Maxis line) it works.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I thought it's a problem with my laptop, so I follow the instructions here to update the router side with 8.8.8.8 DNS instead. That seems to worked for some reason :(
how do you update the router?
ReplyDeleteBTW mine is under Public IP..not sure that is the problem?
ReplyDeletethank you :)
ReplyDeletethanks it works
ReplyDeletemaxis router administrator password is the serial number at behind. look for the serial sticker

ReplyDeleteaccess denied... not working
ReplyDeleteHi, i tried a lot of times my password got access denied, any idea what to do next? pretty sure i type the correct one with case sensitive..
ReplyDeletecant telnet, could not open connection to the host, on port 23. connection failed.
ReplyDeletealready add windows features and allow port 23 on my pc. please help
Seems Maxis has changed the password from the Access Key to the Serial Number. However, they have blocked telnet from the local LAN IPs.
ReplyDeleteLogin not allowed (User 'Administrator' is disallowed to login from lan to telnet)
I read some articles that we need to get the .ini file through FTP or the web config page, but both doesn't work on the router.
Anyone knows a way around this?
Called Maxis earlier to resolve some network issue and realised they have access to their routers remotely. They flashed the firmware and now I am experiencing the same as shared by @Benjamin. The alternative would be via this hidden link:
ReplyDeleteDNS Change URL: http://192.168.1.254/cgi/b/intfs/_pool_/cfg/?be=0&l0=4&l1=2&&name=LAN_private&intf=eInternet
Hope this helps :-)

ReplyDeletei try find the Access Key at bottom of router but is nothing.only S/N.
ReplyDeleteTry use S/N but is not able access, anyone got idea?
@Andy Should work with serial number. Another option would be to reflash your firmware assuming Maxis has logged into your router and changed this as I've shared.
ReplyDeleteTried the above method. DNS works but VOIP stopped working. couldn't get it to work even with factory reset.
ReplyDeleteWaiting for maxis to come and check.
changes made in http://192.168.1.254/cgi/b/intfs/_pool_/cfg/?be=0&l0=4&l1=2&&name=LAN_private gets overridden, so its useless
hi, ive tried entering my access key but it prompted invalid username/password..i use Administrator as the username
ReplyDeleteI tried telnet but it come out the below message:
ReplyDeleteConnecting To 192.168.1.254...Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Connect failed
Can advice?
When it is changed then you've got to go into the new password. For security purposes, it's advised to change the default password. Author is an expert of linksys router login, visit here for more interesting information.
